The generosity of donors is a selfless gift that allows me to continue my education at the University of Virginia and compete in both cross country and track and field.”

PETER MORRIS | Hamilton, VA
Men’s Cross Country

“I am from Loudoun County, Virginia which is about 2.5 hours away from Charlottesville. I love the diverse geography of Virginia and am honored to be able to represent the state through UVA.

I chose UVA because it is a great and highly valued academic university with an impressive history. I am studying for my BS in electrical engineering and I’m looking for a job in that field, specifically power generation/the electrical grid.

Cross country/track and field are unique sports. While there is the personal side of the sport to be the best and run the fastest, there is also a team aspect that brings everyone together. Track and field is specifically unique since it comprises several different events, but we are still one team.”

STUDENT-ATHLETE ALUMNI

Lauren Coughlin (Women’s Golf)

John Pond (Football)

As two former walk-ons, our greatest memory from our time was when we both became full scholarship athletes. Our scholarships were made possible by the continued support of the Virginia Athletics Foundation and the thousands of donors who chose to support us as student-athletes.

Upon graduation we immediately decided to support the VAF and continue to give back in support of our athletics program. Support of the VAF allows our student-athletes to have the resources necessary to achieve their full academic and athletic potential.

This year has been challenging in every way imaginable, but we remain passionate about giving back to help inspire our student-athletes to reach their dreams. We hope other Hoos will join us in supporting the VAF to help propel Virginia Athletics forward and ensure our student-athletes are champions in the classroom, on the field, and in the community.

Dawn Crim (Women’s Basketball)

Why do you support the Virginia Athletics Foundation?
Being a student-athlete at Virginia was a unique experience for which I am extremely proud. It provided me the opportunity to combine my love for basketball with vigorous academic studies. I received an excellent education and learned so many valuable lessons from Debbie Ryan through basketball. Without a scholarship, I would not have been able to afford to attend UVA. The Virginia Athletics Foundation provided this opportunity by supporting my education so I contribute to support current and future student-athletes.

What is the reason you made a gift in 2020, especially during a time of uncertainty and not being able to attend sporting events?
The uncertainty is a reality for everyone. I am blessed to continue to be employed therefore, I am able to continue to contribute. I admire all that colleges and universities have had to take on to continue educating students and to continue their sports programs. This is a small way to lend my support and appreciation.

What message would you give to fans of Virginia Athletics that are not currently donors to the program?
An investment in education makes a big difference. An investment to support Virginia Athletics makes a huge difference for the student-athletes and the university. New donors will be contributing to a legacy of excellence and will help ensure that the excellence continues into the future.

DONOR SUPPORT

Barry Miles

Why do you support the Virginia Athletics Foundation?
I have enjoyed UVA Athletics since 1964, and during my years at the University, I went to almost every football and basketball game. I was especially excited about basketball and served as a manager for the basketball team. Through that association and seeing how hard student-athletes prepared and worked, while still taking a full load of courses, I grew to appreciate what a special group of individuals our student-athletes are. Supporting the Virginia Athletics Foundation (VAF) is a way that I can show this appreciation over the years.

What is the reason you made a gift in 2020, especially during a time of uncertainty and not being able to attend sporting events?
I have been a member of the VAF since the early 1970’s, but feel like 2020 was the most important year of the past 50 years to generously give to the VAF. My number one hobby and pastime is attending UVA basketball and football games. Yes, I deeply miss attending these games, but the sacrifices of all of our student-athletes this past year have been far greater than those of us fans. The least we can do as fans and athletic supporters is to give as generously as we can so that they can continue to represent our University. I felt that making a larger gift in 2020 was even more important to help compensate for those who could not give as much because of the impact of the virus on their livelihoods, or on their ability and desire to give.

What message would you give to fans of Virginia Athletics that are not currently donors to the program?
Donations are critical to our student-athletes and our ability to field nationally competitive teams. The VAF, not the University, funds student-athlete scholarships. Currently, the VAF is funding over 750 student athletes, many of which might not be able to attend the University of Virginia, compete on its athletic teams, and obtain a degree from the University without this important source of funding.

When you receive a scholarship, it is like all of your hard work, effort, and determination is being recognized and revitalized all at once.”
