TEE IT UP

The Tee it Up Golf Tournament fundraiser benefiting the UVA men’s and women’s golf programs was held at Birdwood Golf Course on Friday, October 28. Donors and a record number of men’s and women’s golf alumni made up 20 foursomes, and each group was assigned a student-athlete from one of the golf programs. Coaches and several student-athletes were also stationed at various holes to provide replacement shots for foursomes to count on those holes during the shamble format. Each participant received a V-sabre fairway headcover and a boxed lunch prior to the shotgun.

Following the round, participants attended an awards reception with a dinner buffet in Boar’s Head Inn’s Hearth and Patio rooms. Both teams introduced themselves to the group and coaches provided appreciative remarks. Two “Closest to the Pin” and two “Lonest Drive” proximity prizes were awarded, and many names were drawn to receive team-issued items from the prize table, including towels, a golf bag, a Chippo game, headcovers, duffel bags, a backpack, balls, and more. Prizes were also awarded to the three top teams. The fist place team consisting of four men’s golf alumni Eli Barnes, Mike Mitchell, Kevin O’Connell, former pro golfer Cameron Yancey and men’s student-athlete Grayson Wotnosky. Head Men’s Golf Coach Bowen Sargent commented, “What a wonderful day to have our alums and friends of golf join our current players with the goal of supporting Virginia golf. Tee it Up has become the avenue to unify all the teams over the years. It’s such a special day, one our team looks forward to each year. Many thanks to all those who joined us. Let’s continue to grow the day in years to come.”

As this year marked the 20th anniversary of the women’s golf program, the women’s alumni enjoyed several additional gatherings, including a Friday night reception and Saturday tailgate prior to the UVA vs. Miami football game. Head Women’s Golf Coach Ria Scott shared, “we loved having Tee It Up back at Birdwood for the first time since 2015. The entire weekend was a great celebration of Virginia Golf’s past, present, and future. We welcomed back men’s and women’s golf supporters and alumni as we celebrated the 20th season of women’s golf, and the success of both programs so far.”
